?47: The U.K. and Australia Type Reading&Speaking
Period One
Analysis of this material This lesson introduces students to another two English-speaking countries. Students will learn facts about the U.K. and Australia including what the national flag looks like, what the capital of the country is, what the national animal of the country is, and what some geological or historic landmarks of the country are. As well, students will be able to use directional words to describe the location of both countries.
Analysis of students Students are in the first term of Grade 7. The new words are abstract for them to understand, so I explain these new words by using of pictures. The students may feel a little difficult learning the phrases. So it’s necessary to have more practices via some games and activities. Considering students’ different abilities, I design teaching activities of different levels. So the students can choose one that they can do.
Teaching Aims Knowledge & Skills 1.Students are able to master four-skilled words and phrases: kangaroo, opera, tower, the same…as…, in the corner, the capital of, one of…
2.Students are able to master some key structures and expressions: It has the same colours as the flag of the U.S. Kangaroo is one of the national animals of Australia.
3.The students get to know basic facts about the U.K. and Australia.
4.The students are able to talk about the U.K. and Australia in English.

Class Opening: Greeting Greet the students warmly. Help students respond in an appropriate way. Warm-up and create a relaxing atmosphere.
Step1: Lead-in Guess what. What country’s map is it? Stimulate Students’ interests. And lead into the new concept.
Step2: Presentation ①Show some pictures about the U.K. and Australia on the screen. Let students get to know basic facts about both countries. For the students to get some basic information about the U.K. and Australia. They are helpful for students to learn the main concept.
②Extension. Introduce more facts about the U.K. and Australia, including their delicious food, famous universities. Help students have a better understanding of the U.K. and Australia.
Step3: Practice ①Have the students read the lesson and finish off exercises on the screen. Check the answers as a class. Help students grasp the key words. And develop students’ ability to catch the main information in reading.
②Listen to the tape and ask students to read the lesson aloud by themselves. Make the information trees of both countries. Develop students’ speaking skills. Let them have a general idea of the lesson.
③Group work. Find their friends and talk about what they know about the U.K. and Australia. Improve the sense of cooperation and the ability of communication.
Step 4:
Summary Invite students to introduce something about the U.K. and Australia. And explain key language notes. Help students retell the text. Develop their abilities of summarizing and expressing. Let them talk about countries.
Step5: Homework Write a short passage about the U.K. and Australia. Involve writing into homework.
Class Closing: Enjoy a song Enjoy a video “London bridge is falling down” and sing along with it. Help the students get interested in English.
